Candy's Corner

Hi, Everyone!

There is not much to write about because I barely have any time to check on my girls! I wish I had more time to go into my hives but during the busy season I am stuck at my desk Monday through Saturday trying to help customers choose the right beekeeping supplies. Agh, all my Saturdays are gone….! Ha, I am joking. In all seriousness, I love my customers and I enjoy helping them. Through their stories and experiences I have been able to pick up tips that have helped me manage my girls. I listen to their stories about starving bees or hive beetles overrunning the hive and then I rush home to add feed or set hive beetle traps. I compare it to watching the weather channel to know if I can sun bathe or stay indoors out of the rain.

From what information I have gathered from my customers, it seems that there was a mix with winter losses. Some lost all, some a few, or if you’re like me you lost NONE. Whoop Whoop! I am sorry for those who did lose their hives. I have been in that boat and it isn’t fun. Don’t be discouraged. No matter how much you do for your girls, some don’t make it. It takes a lot to get back up and spend the $100 but it is worth it!

I did actually check my hives a few weeks ago and I was pleased with how well they looked. I found each queen and I couldn’t help but get “giddy” when I spotted them. Now, I am feeding as much as they will consume until the nectar flow is here. I did notice some poop at the entrance of the hive so I am going to try Super DFM to “help restore the natural bacteria in the gut of the honey bees.” Everyone needs probiotics! We will see how well it works.

See you at the Bee Farm!
