This in-depth four hour class is to prepare beginning beekeepers who want to know the sustainable options in beekeeping available to them. It has three parts. In each part, we focus on sustainable materials and management techniques:
In Part 1, we focus on the physical and social structure of honeybee colonies. Then we review their seasonal cycles from spring buildup to winter management. This includes a review of hive location and forage availability.
In Part 2, we review different beehive types (Langstroth, Warre, Kenya topbar, and Longhives). We review sustainable beehive materials and the sustainable approach to colony management.
In Part 3, we review how to install your colony the gentle way. And we discuss common mistakes to avoid in your first months of beekeeping.
We stay behind after class to address additional questions not covered during the presentation.
Special note: This classroom is upstairs. If you are interested in taking this class, but are unable to navigate stairs, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you for this or a future class.
