Having one size super, frame, and foundation throughout your entire hive greatly simplifies beekeeping! Please Note: Due to the dimensions on the supers, 2-4 MUST SHIP AT THE 45 LB. RATE. Super strong construction. Cypress resists decay and repels insects. | |
| I chose these supers because I was born and live in south Louisiana where Cypress trees grow; therefore I am very familiar with the qualities of the wood. These trees originated from growing in swamp water. Cypress wood is very resistant to decay from dampness [rain, humility, melting snow, etc.]. Cypress is also very resistant to insects. Even termites rarely eat Cypress wood. In Dixie; we always built things like picnic tables, swings, etc. with Cypress wood knowing they will last much longer than if built from other wood. These Brushy Mountain supers are clearly built from what we call “new” Cypress [young trees]. “Old” Cypress [from an old tree] is extremely expensive. I suggest painting these supers or coating them with fiberglass resin. Regardless, I think they will last much longer than pine. The paint or resin will hold to “new” Cypress. Some interesting trivia: “Old” Cypress wood is so resilient to external hazards; if you paint it, the wood will excrete oil that will remove the paint. I had this happen to a Cyprus house that was built 90 years ago with “Old” Cypress. “Old” Cypress wood last longer if you do not paint it. That is why you see pictures of old Louisiana homes, barns, etc. with the paint peeled off. | ||
